History of Cully Farmers Market
The Cully Collective Market was launched in the spring of 2007. A group of community members worked together voluntarily and cooperatively to stage a weekly market in the parking lot of Trinity Lutheran Church. Most of the vendors were backyard farmers from the neighborhood, including Cully Neighborhood Farm, which operated on the church property. The vegetable rows were visible from the market and were transported by wheelbarrow across the soccer field to set up at the market. This ran for 2 years on a small scale and served the neighborhood with hyper local food.
The Cully Farmers Market (CFM) then moved to the PCC workforce lot on the corner of 42nd and Killingsworth to be more visible and centrally located. At that time, they partnered with Central Northeast Neighbors as our fiscal sponsor. A few years later, CFM partnered with Our 42nd Avenue with the shared goals in mind of community building and inclusion. The market continued to grow and thrive with the management of Our 42nd Avenue and market steering committee.
At the start of the pandemic, in 2020, CFM did not run for the first time in almost 23 years. However, something amazing was happening behind the scenes…
In September of 2020, Our 42nd Ave dissolved itself as a nonprofit and transferred all of its assets and programs to the Native American Youth and Family Center NAYA). This included CFM. With both Our 42nd Ave and CFM moving under the NAYA umbrella, both entities gained more internal resources. Our 42nd Ave and CFM have been adopted as program of NAYA for the last 6 years.
The values and mission of CFM align closely and wholeheartedly with those of NAYA; CFM exists to support community members in the Cully neighborhood and surrounding communities, with a priority in ensuring that historically marginalized groups have equal opportunity to participate and find success within CFM. This includes venders, entertainers, musicians and volunteers.
NAYA is excited to continue this amazing program we all love and know as the Cully Farmers Market.
